The national flag of Wales (red dragon on a white and green background) and the flag of Saint David (yellow cross on a black field) are flying on St David's Day.

The Co-existence of Diversity and Harmony

The United Kingdom includes England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, each of which has its distinct customs, cultures and symbolism, in addition to the history of the formation of the United Kingdom.

The Co-existence of Difference and Tolerance

While England is the largest island, it does not enjoy a monopoly of political power in the territory.  There is a statutory granting of powers from the Parliament of the United Kingdom to relevant authorities of her islands, including the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, the Northern Ireland Assembly and the London Assembly;  and to their associated executive bodies, namely Scottish Government, the Welsh Government, the Northern Ireland Executive and the Greater London Authority. Each of them has their distinctive home rules and regulations.

Perfect Integration of Tradition and Modernity

A Good Balance of “Old” and “New” without completely overflowing the past

Tradition

A Constitutional Monarchy:  a liberal democracy with the monarch as the symbolic head

Modernity

"The global influences of the United Kingdom can be observed in the language, culture and legal systems of many of its former colonies. Therefore, it is a precious chance for me, as a social science student, to have the exchange porgramme in the U.K."

In the UK, it is not difficult to observe a sense of history at every street corner, such as classic London Taxis, public telephone stations, and historical heritages like classic castles and churches in different towns. Instead of modernizing the cities at the expense of historical elements, the cities in the UK, very often, are perfect combinations of both the old and the new.

A Variety of Festivals in Different Regions of UK

For example, St. Patrick's Day in Ireland and St. David's Day in Wales

St. Patrick's Day

The feast of St Patrick (17 March) commemorates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. It is a cultural and religious festival which celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.

St. David's Day

An important feast for Welsh people to commemorate Saint David, a well-known Welsh bishop in the 6th century, and to celebrate the Welsh culture.
